Abstract

Denning Lecture 2005In lectures named after famous men, it is the custom for the lecturer to start with a tribute to the great man in question.  This is as it should be.  In the case of Lord Denning, the greatest judge of our time, one could start easily enough.  The difficulty would be knowing where to stop. Fortunately the task of doing justice to Lord Denning, both as a person and as a judge, was undertaken by Lord Bingham before a huge congregation in Westminster Abbey in June 1999.  It will never be done better.  So instead I will refer to just three incidents in his life.
